A lot of us are still facing lockdowns and social distancing measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Or, if things are opening back up, we’re still trying to figure out how to return to a sense of normality in our day-to-day lives. It’s been over a year of isolation from our friends, families and communities….and oddly enough, the 2020 UEFA Euro Championship is bringing an unexpected dash of joy, laughter and excitement in a personal world that has been lacking these positive emotions for so long.
Seeing fans begin to fill stadiums, footballers give their last breath so that their teams would make it to the next round and people who are important to us passionately scream in support of their favorite teams, is something that I did not expect to emotionally touch me during this football league. Yet still, the nail biting match that took place when Christian Eriksen physically collapsed briefly took us out of this dream of normality and quickly reminded us of the thin ice that is our personal health. Our collective health as people, as human beings, has been tested over the last year and is unfortunately, still a growing concern in many countries around the world.

In a strange way, Eriksen’s subsequent recovery has subconsciously put a mirror in front of all our faces, forcing us to reflect on, and reckon with our own personal comeback stories. The virus, the lockdowns, the personal losses, and pressures on our livelihoods have fundamentally changed the way in which we view the world and the people with whom we share it. Do we go back to the ways things exactly used to be? Or do we find a way to make the most of our remaining moments with others and with ourselves over the next few months and thereafter. Do we create new dreams and new visions for ourselves? Does that require us to step back, slow down and truly reevaluate the things in life that are really important to us? And if so, is that the force that make us more powerful?
Until then, we have a few more exciting matches to look forward to over the next week. So tell me, which team are you rooting for? For me, I’m excited to watch the skill of the Italians. Yet, I love watching games where players actually play as a cohesive unit (a team, if you will), where star players may exist but the team is what ultimately drives the game. With that lens, I hope that the Danes make it through but the English would be a tough team to overcome.
