Behind the Blog
Nail design for the Book of Roger

This nail design was inspired by Muhammad al-Idrisi’s 15-year project to create a single map of the known world at the time. The map covered Europe, Eurasia and parts of Northern Africa, which al-Idrisi was able to chart based on interviews with people who had first hand experience and knowledge of the world.

The nail art tutorial below is for the sea voyage accent nail design on the pictured set. Before you begin, don’t forget to prepare your nail surface with a DIY nail cleanser!

Commentary

In 1154, Muhammad al-Idrisi completed a 15-year project called “The Book of Pleasant Journeys Into Faraway Lands” (or more commonly, “The Book of Roger”) that resulted in a single map of the known world at the time. The map covered Europe, Eurasia and parts of Northern Africa, which al-Idrisi was able to chart based on interviews with people who had first hand experience and knowledge of the world, including explorers, pilgrims, and merchants.

It’s hard to ignore the level of dedication required to execute this project that I had to create a nail design influenced by the style of al-Idrisi’s map.
